My Own Private War

Persoonlijke documentaire waarin de filmmaakster probeert dichter bij de waarheid over de oorlog in haar geboorteland Joegoslavië te komen. Hoe kom je in het reine met je oorlogsverleden en hoe zorg je ervoor dat je je kinderen er niet mee belast? In deze persoonlijke documentaire probeert Lidija Zelovic een antwoord te vinden op die vraag. Zelovic groeit op in Sarajevo, toen nog Joegoslavië, waar in 1992 een burgeroorlog uitbreekt die de bevolking tot op het bot verdeelt. In 1993 vlucht ze naar Nederland. Als oorlogscorrespondent voor o.a. de BBC en later als filmmaakster probeert ze dichter bij de waarheid achter oorlog te komen. Vrienden en familieleden gedragen zich anders, ook nu de oorlog al lang is afgelopen. Wat is er met hen gebeurd? Tijdens het maken van de film komt Zelovic steeds meer tot de overtuiging dat de eigenlijke oorlog in mensen zelf woedt, ook in haar. Filmfestival Vision de Reel scvhreef het volgden over de film:

It’s how the filmmaker proceeds, how she convinces us, her stubbornness, her conscience, her decision to put herself at risk. Having returned to Bosnia, she meets a cousin who was a sniper during the war, a journalist who closely followed Mladics, her loved ones who, around a table, talk of past and present... As the film moves along, something like non-reconciliation surfaces: the filmmaker would like to understand and find peace, but she cannot... Perhaps she never will. An emotional confession of collective responsibility, My Own Private War thus ends up being the film of an impossible love, against fear and hatred.'
